Photography

In childhood I was drawn to Dad’s collection of old black and white photos, he’d been an active photographer in his teenage days as a boy scout. It wasn’t until I’d graduated and started work full-time in Cardiff that a holiday to Norway re-kindled my interest. On returning, my travelling companion gave me a set of his photos from our holiday together, and shortly afterwards I bought a camera – a Canon AE-1 – so I could make my own. My initial enthusiasm for holiday snaps expanded exponentially to include, amongst others, local carnivals, sporting events at Cwmbran Stadium (then an international standard stadium), orienteering, motocross and F3 motor racing at Pembrey. As a full-time chartered quantity surveyor in the building industry my weekends were often occupied in photography, with my own darkroom to process and print complete. Word spread and my employer asked me if I could help out with a short notice project, photographing a recently completed construction project for a presentation. In retrospect photography looks like a thread in the tapestry of my life, extending back as far as I can remember and developing (pun intended) from a hobby (sometimes even paid with enough to cover my materials costs) through to a full-time career – and back again full-circle to photography for its own sake.
