Still something special to me, my first published photograph appeared in The Observer newspaper on 13th December 1987 under the title ‘Two Kids’. I’d attended Usk Agricultural Show earlier in the September and taken a selection of photos on black and white film. I often printed up a selection of 10 x 8’s which I’d offer for sale on display in the local (New Inn) newspaper shop window. On this occasion I noticed the Observer had a ‘Readers Photograph’ section where they’d publish photos, so I sent one off and forgot all about it. In December of that year I received a card from the Picture Desk at The Observer asking me to contact the boy’s grandmother – she wanted a copy of it! I also received a cheque for £25.00, the shape of things to come perhaps!
