Tourist Eye View

Getting the most out of any city (photographically) is best achieved by looking at it from as many angles as possible. For Venice, this means walking (and getting lost in) the narrow medieval streets and alleyways, the neural pathways of the city ‘brain’. On day three a boat trip around the grand canal and the outer islands of the lagoon on the vaparetto gave a different perspective. Then a chance sighting of police activity in a dead-end leg of a canal led to the discovery of the supposed high suicide rate – amongst tourists! Whether true or not, the hypothesis was that an overwhelming historical ‘atmosphere’ and overwhelming aesthetic – it is quite a claustrophobic place – had triggered severe psychiatric episodes in vulnerable people who then ended their lives. That didn’t make it into the guide book, but fits neatly into a view of the place with a connection to the Otherworld. The Campanile di San Marco topped out the perspectives with 360 degree views of the city from just over 300 feet above the street level.
